The First Step

By Marcia K. Leaser

January 13, 2007

She crept into the empty room

                           And listened to the silence-

                               for the very first time.

                       Frightened by what she heard,

                           she cowered in the darkness...

                               ignoring the shame

that called her name out loud.

Then realizing, she could hide no longer

from the shadows that knew it all...

                               she stopped denying.

                       At last...

                           she faced her unkind past

                               that held the empty truth

                                   of long ago.

                       Agonizingly, she fought...

to feel the sunshine on her face

to taste the peace she knew was there

                                   somewhere.

                       Reaching... searching...

                           she found the answer

                               deep within.

Then turning from what used to be –

she walked toward the open door.

                               Free to choose...

                                   Free... to be

                                       whom she’d always been.
