On Troubled Waters

Luke 8:24-25  The disciples woke Him up, shouting.  “Master, Master, we’re going to drown!”  So Jesus rebuked the wind and raging waves.  The storm stopped and all was calm.  Then He asked them, “Where is your faith?”  They were filled with awe and amazement.  They said to one another, “Who is this man, that even the winds and waves obey Him?”

The lake was smooth that day, and our little eighteen-foot boat glided easily over the water.  My husband and I laughed and talked as we left the shore behind us.

Suddenly, before we realized it, the waves grew larger, and we noticed, also, there were no other boats on the vast body of water.

"I think we'd better head back," my husband said in a voice that frightened me.

He'd been out on this lake often, but I was rather new to its control.

We turned around immediately and both of us were completely shocked to see how far we were from shore.

We headed that direction as fast as we dared.  By this time, the waves were about four foot high and tossed us around like tissue paper.

I was so frightened I was trembling.

Then I thought of another body of water, long ago, where the disciples were being tossed about.  I remembered how Jesus calmed the sea with just one command to His Heavenly Father.

"Lord Jesus calm these waves as You did on Galilee," I whispered.

Then I hung on and watched the waves rising higher and higher before me.

No, the waves didn't suddenly lessen.  Nor did the waters part, and we walk on dry land to shore.  The change was not taking place on the water at all.  The change was in me.

I stopped trembling and knew in my heart we'd be all right.

As we turned safely into the harbor I thanked God for getting us safely home, and for the mighty lesson I'd learned that day.

Prayer:  Thank You, Father, for the joy of knowing You.  The awareness of Your Presence no matter in what situation I find myself.  The privilege of being able to call Your name above the storm and never doubting that You hear.

Thought for the day:  May we always be assured You are by our side in the mighty storms of life..
